Huawei has been secretly developing a collection of affordable tablets, and the recent model that is no exception is the MatePad SE 11. Unveiled in June 2024, it comes with a 11-inch FHD+ display, a huge 7700 mAh battery, four speakers, and optional stylus support, but in an all-metal unibody chassis that appears much pricier than its actual cost. However, is it as good as the hype? We tried it to the end to see.
This review is intended to those who are a student, a family seeking to get a shared entertainment tablet or even a person who desires a big screen device without necessarily spending a lot of money.
Huawei MatePad SE 11 Design & Build
The Huawei MatePad SE 11 is so comfortable that the first thing you touch when you grab it is how comfortable it is. Its all-aluminum unibody chassis provides it with some rigidity and a high-end feel that is uncommon at the price. Flat back, sleek edges and a well integrated rear camera module complete the picture.
Its thinness of 6.9 mm and weight of 475 g make it easy to read or browse long, but it is not as light as some of the iPad Air competitors. It is available in two sleek colors (Nebula Gray and Crystal Blue) that appear understated and non-glamorous.
One aspect to consider: it lacks a headphone jack, which will annoy those who like wired sounds. You will require a USB-C or Bluetooth headphones.

The 85% screen to body ratio is contemporary and the thin bezel really brings the content to life. To the media consumption, study, or light creative use, this display is truly a bargain marvel.

The Huawei MatePad SE 11 is powered by a Snapdragon 680 chipset (6 nm) with up to 8 GB of RAM under the hood. This is sufficient to use it in daily life- web browsing, video streaming, video calling, taking notes and performing some light multitasking. Applications load faster and the HarmonyOS interface is smooth.
This is not a performance tablet, however. Strenuous activities such as intensive gaming or video processing in 4K will reveal its weaknesses. It is a 2021 Snapdragon 680, which is a mid-range chip, so it is not expected to perform as well as the iPad Air or Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series. Lightweight games such as Subway Surfers or Candy Crush do not have issues; however, more intensive games might have frame drops.
The HarmonyOS 4.2 experience is optimized and clean. Split-screen multitasking (two tiled windows + floating windows) is very easy, and multi-screen teamwork with Huawei devices is a pleasant addition to users in the Huawei ecosystem. The largest downside is still the lack of Google Play Services – you will have to use the AppGallery and sideloading to install apps.

Huawei MatePad SE 11 has 8 MP rear and 5 MP front camera. Truthfully, these are tablet-based cameras – they are there to make video calls, scan documents, and have the occasional casual photo. The back camera is able to capture up to 1080p and can cope with light conditions reasonably well.
There is a significant loss in quality in low light. It has no night mode and optical image stabilization. In video conferencing, its main application, the front camera is good with reasonable level of detail and fair color reproduction.
This is not the device to have in case photography is a priority. The cameras get the job done, however, as a practical study and work companion.

The best selling point of the Huawei MatePad SE 11 is arguably its battery life. The massive 7700 mAh battery allows you to easily spend a full day on heavy use – and even the less intensive user can easily spindle it out to two days.
Our experiment with video streaming of medium brightness used around 8-10 percent an hour. Web browsing and reading were even more frugal. It has a real-life video watching capacity of 10+ hours on a charge.
The 22.5W wired fast charging takes care of charging, and gets the battery to 100 percent charge in about 90 minutes, which is not bad considering the 7700 mAh cell. The reverse charging feature of 5W is an added advantage of charging earbuds or wearables.

Four Speaker That Are Impressive.
This is another aspect that the Huawei MatePad SE 11 is superior. The four-speaker system supported by Huawei Histen 9.0 provides deep, broad, and surprisingly loud audio. Be it when watching movies, listening to music, or even on a video call, the sound quality is far more than you would hope to hear on a budget tablet.
Landscape mode is great in stereo separation and bass response is good considering the fact that it is a very thin device. The only blemish here is the lack of headphone jack.
Huawei MatePad SE 11 Stylus Support
M-Pen Lite: Perfectly good with Students, Not so with Artists.
Another differentiator of Huawei MatePad SE 11 is the optional Huawei M-Pen Lite. Stylus is not commonly found at this price range, and so this is especially appealing to students who wish to write notes using their hands, or draw diagrams.
The M-Pen Lite is simple pressure sensitive and can be useful in the note-taking apps of HarmonyOS. But it is not a professional-level stylus – latency is evident in challenging drawing software, and the feel is not as good as an Apple Pencil or Samsung S Pen. It is a really handy tool to study and make a quick sketch. To be illustratively professional, go elsewhere.
